Project Overview

A rambling farmhouse began its life as two separate buildings – subsequently cobbled together as one. The new owners brought the crumbling structure back to life, painting it vintage red, as lodging for children and grandchildren visiting from Texas. The renewal of the landscape took advantage of the home’s siting among orchards, vineyards and meadows with an adjacent pool, tennis court and petanque court. The renovated pool was preserved in a relaxed setting where groundcover fills slots between pavement slabs. New lawns and walks define planting beds filled with a riot of old fashioned farmhouse flowers. Low stone walls frame views to the vineyard and provide seating during family gatherings. The white barn, sited between the red farmhouse and a caretaker’s dark-gray cottage, was added in a subsequent phase to provide event space, sleeping bag lodging and storage. Adjacent roads and parking were successfully planned to provide gracious access to the vast property and redirect farm activity away from the compound.
