Randy is a licensed landscape architect with nearly forty years of professional practice in a variety of project types and scales. Since establishing RTD he has designed each of the studio's commissions. Randy was raised in rural Michigan and developed a love of landscape and environment during explorations of his grandfather's farm and surrounding countryside. As a youngster he worked in the gardens of family and friends' learning the species and varieties of numerous trees, shrubs, and perennials as well as fruits and vegetables. Combining his interest in nature with studies in mathematics, drafting and construction led to enrollment in the Landscape Architecture program at Michigan State University. He graduated from MSU in 1975 with honors. Undertaking a dramatically new direction at the start of his professional career, Randy decided to relocate to an urban environment and chose Boston as his new home. He apprenticed in Cambridge with Gardiner Associates and The Architects Collaborative (TAC) working in the public realm of parks, universities and new towns. He joined the multidisciplinary firm of Sasaki Associates in 1979 and soon became one of the lead designers in the Landscape Architecture studio. Here he worked closely with Stuart Dawson, FASLA, on a number of urban revitalization projects in Boston, Charleston, Chicago and Dallas. In 1984 Randy and a group of architects and engineers from Sasaki Associates established a branch office for the company in Dallas, Texas. The office was formed specifically to work on the initial stages of implementation of the Dallas Arts District - emerging on 40 acres of land surrounding the recently completed Dallas Museum of Art and Meyerson Symphony Center. Relocating to San Francisco in 1987, Randy worked as senior designer on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica with ROMA Design Group. He then became a member of the design staff at Peter Walker and Partners and worked with Arata Isozaki and Associates on the design of Harima Science City in the Hyogo Prefecture of Japan. The work of his own firm draws on his extensive and varied experiences in landscape and urban design. Randy is committed to a collaborative approach with clients, colleagues, contractors and artisans to design and build distinctive landscapes tailored to context, site and the people who will inhabit them.
