This midcentury home was revived with contemporary quality without losing its vintage integrity. To complement the home the main outdoor space at the entrance level, half a level below the street, was completely reenvisioned as a dramatic place of arrival, useful for entertaining, outdoor cooking and dining. A steel and concrete wall and pivoting gate made a dramatic presentation of the property while solving numerous physical challenges.
All levels of the home opened to wrap around decks and were joined together with a new sequence of commodious stairs to reach a lower-level home office. From this level another staircase led to a new garden terrace. Here planters for vegetables and herbs were added to utilize the wall of the homes crawl space and foundation. A steep hillside garden, now accessible, was filled with flowering plant material in the shade of dramatic redwood trees. Every forbidding aspect of this challenging property was reclaimed for enjoyment and use.
